BOOK SIGNING EVENT AT EISENHOWER LIBRARY
Author Kasey Pipes will speak at 7:00 p.m. on April 18th at the Eisenhower Library in Abilene about his new book “IKE’S LAST BATTLE: THE ROAD TO LITTLE ROCK AND THE CHALLENGE OF EQUALITY.” Mr. Pipes will be available to sign copies of his book.
The greatest American leader of his time would have to confront the greatest American dilemma of all time. It was a battle he did not want but could not avoid. And it was a battle that would change history. This is Ike’s Final Battle.
“The nation liked Ike because it saw so much of itself in him. Like the nation when it was forced to face its racial dilemma, Eisenhower also had to face the tension between his unanalyzed assumptions and the better angels of his nature. How he struggled to do so is a fascinating story, sensitively told by Kasey S. Pipes. This mind-opening book shows that Eisenhower's coming-to-terms with the coming civil rights revolution was, like the man himself, more complex and admirable than has hitherto been appreciated.”
--George F. Will, syndicated columnist
“With his lyrical narrative, Kasey S. Pipes brings to life two of the great stories of the 20th century: Dwight D. Eisenhower and the civil rights movement. The convergence of these two forces creates a powerful drama—one that changed America and one that is worth reading.”
--Matthew J. Dowd, co-author of the New York Times
Bestseller, “Applebee’s America”

50th
Anniversary Celebration - October 10-12, 2002
ABILENE,
KS-The Eisenhower Center will host numerous activities in conjunction
with the 50th Anniversary of the Eisenhower Presidency. Click the image
above to get a complete itinerary of the three day event.
WANT TO BE PART OF
A MUSEUM?
(Press Release, March 18, 2002)
ABILENE,
KS-If so, look in your attic, in "Fibber McGee's Closet," under
the bed, or wherever you hide your relics from the "Nifty Fifties."
We understand why you have never been able to part with them. They may
have been the first new and modern things you owned, or the things with
which you set up housekeeping. Perhaps they belonged to your mom or grandma.
They deserve better, but what could you do? Most people just wrapped them
in newspaper, and tucked them away with the thought that maybe they will
come back in style someday.
But,
we have a better idea. You can be represented in the Eisenhower Museum.
Send us a photograph of your treasures by June 30, 2002, and they may
be chosen to be featured in the museum's new Presidential Gallery! The
exhibit will feature a typical 50s living room, a basement fallout shelter,
and a Duckwall's Variety Store window where your treasure might find a
permanent home.
The
Eisenhower Foundation has issued a call for anyone interested to send
a photograph of items to be considered for use in the museum exhibits.
The exhibit will be a permanent part of the Eisenhower Museum, and all
items must be donated. No loans will be considered.
The
living room requires furniture, drapes, and all items that are normally
found is a living room; the store front needs whatever you might see on
the shelves of a variety store, including small household goods, small
kitchen items, toys, and odds and ends; the fall-out shelter needs survival
type equipment, flashlights, a Geiger counter, and personal items that
you would take into the shelter for your "comfort." All items
must be from the 1950s.
Send
your clear color photographs to The Eisenhower Foundation, P.O. Box 295,
Abilene, Kansas. Photos will not be returned. Owners of items that are
chosen for use in the new museum will be given a free season pass to the
Eisenhower Museum and other recognition. If you have questions, you may
call the Eisenhower Center at 785-263-4751, or toll free 1-877 746-4453

Museum, Abilene, Kansas. "Bob Hope: American Patriot" opened August
1st and will run through February 15, 2004. Bob Hope has become one of the most
recognized personalities in the world, and in the history of show business no
individual traveled so far and so often to entertain so many. For sixty years,
he and a group of Hollywood gypsies traveled the globe to enterain our men and
women in uniform. His first military audience was at March Field, California,
in 1941, and his last was in 1983 at the age of 86 when he visited the troups
in the Middle East during Operation Desert Shield.
Visitors to the exhibit will see uniform items
presented from WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and the Gulf War; congressional and military
citations; signed manuscripts from presidents Roosevelt to Clinton; a golf club
presented to Hope by Richard Nixon; a putter Hope gave to President Eisenhower;

EISENHOWER PRESIDENTIAL
LIBRARY HONORS GRANT FROM READER'S DIGEST FOUNDATION IN NAMING NEW PRESIDENTIAL
GALLERY
Abilene,
Kansas, (Nov. 04, 2002) - The Eisenhower Foundation and Reader's Digest
Foundation have announced an innovative educational collaboration to
benefit the Eisenhower Presidential Library, in Abilene, Kansas. The
purpose of this new relationship will be to provide assistance to the
Eisenhower Presidential Library in reaching out to new generations
of Americans - teaching the values and leadership of Dwight D. Eisenhower,
the 34th President of the United States.
To
firmly establish its commitment to this educational relationship, the
Reader's Digest Foundation made a significant financial contribution
to the Eisenhower Foundation. This contribution helped to make possible
the opening of the new Presidential Gallery at the Eisenhower Presidential
Library, and a new on-site Education Center classroom, now in the planning
stage of construction. To acknowledge and honor this contribution,
the Presidential Gallery has been named the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential
Library and Reader's Digest Foundation Education Center. GEORGE H.W.
Bush, the 41st President of the United States officially opened the
Presidential Gallery, on October 12, 2002 during the Eisenhower Day
Celebration.
Stewart
Etherington, President of the Eisenhower Foundation, reflected on this
new relationship between the Foundations, "The Reader's Digest
Foundation has a tradition of supporting educational programs which
help young people realize their full potential. We are thrilled that
they have chosen the Eisenhower Presidential Library and the Eisenhower
Foundation as an extension of their endeavors. We look forward to working
with them to educate entirely new generations of Americans to the values
our country represents."
Kim Barbieri, Education Specialist at the Eisenhower
Library, enthusiastically praised the collaboration; "Thanks to the generosity
and farsightedness of the Reader's Digest Foundation, and the National Archives
and Records Administration (NARA), construction on the new museum classroom and
education office will begin soon. Equipped with state-of-the art technology,
our classroom will allow the education office to deliver creative, high-quality,
onsite programs. I'm very excited about the challenges ahead and even more about
the opportunities to contribute to the improvement of history and civic education
for the benefit our young people."
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and
Reader's Digest Foundation Education Center provides visitors the opportunity
to learn more of not only the Eisenhower Administration, but of everyday American
life from 1945 to 1960 through computer interactive, videos, and displays. As
part of the Eisenhower Library and Museum, the Presidential Gallery and planned
classroom will become integral parts of a newly developed on-site educational
program that will allow hands-on, project-based, interdisciplinary learning experiences
for K-12 students, teachers, and the general public.
The Reader's Digest Foundation is a private foundation
solely funded by the Reader's Digest Association, Inc. The foundation funds employee
matching gifts, volunteer support and scholarship programs; offers general grants;
and provides grants to college students pursuing careers in publishing. The Reader's
Digest Association, Inc., headquartered in Pleasantville, NY, is a global leader
in publishing and direct marketing.
The
Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum are operated by NARA, a
federal agency, and are governed by federal statute and related federal
codes. All NARA presidential libraries are constructed with private
and/or non-federal funds then presented to NARA, which provides federal
funding for operating expenses.
