Home > What's New > The Eisenhower Foundation: Awards & Programs Awards & ProgramsThe Eisenhower Foundation Endowment funds educational programs at the Eisenhower Center. The Eisenhower Center receives no appropriated federal funds for design and installation of exhibits, implementation of public programs, or special events. The Center must rely on the Eisenhower Foundation. To enhance current programs and develop new ones, the Eisenhower Foundation seeks continuing Donations in Endowment to support the Center's programs.
Awards & Programs - Details
THE EISENHOWER LECTURE SERIES is presented periodically as funds permit. It is the Foundation's intent that the lecture series becomes an annual event of the Eisenhower Center. Scholars will be invited from throughout the world to speak on topics related to the many facets of the Eisenhower Era and its legacy. Lecturers will be invited from the fields of history, economics, sociology, military history, politics, business, foreign relations, and fiction. Return
To List THE EISENHOWER CITIZENSHIP AWARD will be given to that individual who personifies the humanitarian and civic leadership of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Recipients of the specially commissioned award will be known for their outstanding private, civic, public, or scholarly service. Return
To List THE EISENHOWER BOOK AWARD will recognize outstanding scholarship on any aspect of American or world history pertaining to the life, times, and legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower. The recipient need not be a professional scholar or academician to be considered. The Award medallion, presentation dinner, and lecture will be given only when an appropriate work is nominated and approved. Return
To List EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING Endowment funds will be allocated annually for noteworthy topical seminars and workshops. Recent seminars and workshops include: "The Great Crusade: The Road to the White House, 1952," "The Soldiers Story: D-Day, 1944," and "World War II, The Home Front"(a teachers' workshop). Future seminars in development are: "NATO," "The Cold War," "Civil Rights in the 1950s and 1960s," Fads and Culture of the 1950s and 1960s," "When National Conventions Meant Something," "Rise of the Third World," "The Space Race," "The Eisenhower Administration in Retrospect," "The Legacy of the Cold War". To List SPECIAL EVENTS PROGRAMS funding comes from the Eisenhower Foundation. Recent events include: The Eisenhower Centennial which attracted 55,000 people in one weekend; the Fiftieth anniversary reunion of the first WACs; World War II re-enactors camp; the "Soldiers Story, D Day, 1944," "Fashions of the 1940s--A Style Show," plus special film and theatrical performances. Events under consideration include 1940s, '50s and '60s cultural, social, musical, and theatrical programs designed for young audiences. Upcoming events include: PICTT Conference, April 7; History Day State Finals, May 6, (Kansas); Dwight D. Eisenhower Day, October 12; Eisenhower Birthday Celebration Dinner, October 13; and Korean War Teachers Conference, February 9, 2001. Return
To List TEMPORARY MUSEUM EXHIBITS funded by the Foundation include: "Personal Accounts: World War II," " The Commanders: The Art of Churchill, Eisenhower, and Hitler," "NASA at 35," "Life Styles of the 1940s," "Presidential Inaugurals," "White House Treasures," "Workers at the White House," and "The Art of War" (US and Imperial War Museum collections). Upcoming exhibits include: "America's First Ladies" Exhibit, February 18-July 31; "As Seen on TV: M*A*S*H*" Exhibit, August-July 2001. Return
To List TRAVELING EXHIBITS range from the architectural model of the White House to "Powers of Persuasion," an exhibit on the use of propaganda, and "Oliphant" Cartoons. Return
To List EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND PROGRAMS are produced for classroom teachers with Endowment funds. These materials relate to specific topics of the Eisenhower era such as education, World War II, the Cold War, the President's family, Civil Rights, and changes in the governmental process. Return
To List TRAVELING EXHIBITION ON EISENHOWER The Museum seeks to produce a three phase traveling exhibition on Eisenhower. Phase 1: The Eisenhower family, a heritage of the Great Plains; Phase II: Eisenhower and Leadership; Phase III: The Presidency, Then and Now. Return
To List AUDIO/VISUAL PRODUCTION AND VIDEO ENHANCEMENT TECHNIQUES will be supported by Endowment funds, in both the Museum's permanent and temporary exhibits, exhibit-keyed videos for loan to schools and groups, and videos for use in conjunction with traveling exhibits. These topical videos will enhance special and continuing exhibits in the Museum gallery, and provide information and instruction on conducting primary research at the Library. Return
To List GENERAL SPEAKERS FUND The Eisenhower Foundation funds the costs of speakers for exhibit openings and topical and educational programs. Past speakers include scholars in a specific exhibit topic, educators, actors portraying Mamie Eisenhower and other historical figures, and Astronaut Joe Engle. Return
To List SUMMER
STUDENT INTERNSHIPS The Endowment Fund provides a stipend for undergraduate
and graduate level students enrolled in American history or an accredited
museum and archives program. The number of stipends given is dependent
upon available funding. Return
To List BOOK PURCHASES The Endowment Fund helps with purchase of new publications for the Library's book collection. Bookplates will be placed in each book recognizing the benefactor. Return
To List TRAVEL GRANTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS Currently the Eisenhower Foundation funds travel grants to Abilene for graduate-level students. In the future, the Foundation seeks to fund grants for undergraduate students as well. The number and amount of grants will be determined by the amount of funds available. This program is on hold until further notice. Return
